A Cosy 24 Hours in Buxton: How I’d Spend One Night With Friends

If friends were coming to Buxton for just one night, this is exactly how I’d show them around — the places that feel warm, the walks that feel restorative, and the little moments that make a winter trip feel special. Buxton is peaceful, unhurried and full of character, and everything below is just a short walk from The Gathering House.
Start Slowly: Breakfast at The Vault

I always start with breakfast out.
The Vault is my go-to — it might look like a pub at first glance, but the breakfasts are genuinely good, and if Sally is serving, you’ll feel like you’ve been welcomed home. It’s warm, friendly, and sets the tone for the rest of the day.
A Gentle Walk to Pavilion Gardens

From there, I’d wander down to Pavilion Gardens. It’s an easy, peaceful walk from the house — good for easing into the morning without rushing.
A takeaway coffee from Rasa is almost essential (it’s the kind of cup you instinctively wrap your hands around). Then I like to potter around the little shops near The Crescent. Nothing strenuous. Just browsing, talking, taking your time.
A Quiet Treat: Chocolate and Warmth

If it’s cold — and it usually is — I’ll stop at hotchocolaterie, the chocolate shop next to Luebens for a hot chocolate (and a rest from the walk up the hill). They also do lovely handmade chocolates, so I often pick up a few to take home. Something small, but it always feels like a treat.
A Short Stroll to the Caves

Poole’s Cavern is only about a ten-minute walk from the house. In winter it can be warmer inside than out, which always amuses me.
It’s an easy outing for mixed-energy groups — interesting enough to feel like “doing something,” but gentle enough that no one feels pushed.
You will need footwear you don’t mind getting a little muddy.
A Winter Afternoon: Tea/Wine & Games

By the afternoon, the pace naturally softens — most groups are happy to pause and stay in for a while.
And if that’s you, there are board games waiting in the cupboard. Winter has a lovely habit of turning small things into memories.
Evening: Firelight & Good Food

For dinner, I often suggest Luebens — especially in winter.
Sitting by the real fire with something to nibble feels exactly right after a cold day out.
But honestly, a lot of groups prefer cooking back at the house.
The kitchen is set up for that kind of evening — two ovens, plenty of space, and the sort of atmosphere where people naturally start chopping, chatting, pouring drinks and settling into their own rhythm. It’s one of the reasons people stay here.

The house has six proper bedrooms — no sofa beds, no awkward choices — just real rooms where people can slow down in their own time.
